It is very sad to report that Britain’s finest shot putter and athletics Legend Geoff Capes has passed away.

Geoff who was a Life Member of the Borough of Enfield Harriers – competed for the Club from 1973 to 1980.

Geoff set the British record for the longest shot putt by a British man with a massive 21.68m … a record that was to stand for thirty years.

Geoff had an amazing and illustrious career, twice winning gold in the shot at both the Commonwealth Games and the European Indoor Championships.
He was a three-time Olympian and came closest to winning a medal with a fifth place finish at the 1980 Games in Moscow.
Geoff who was born in Lincolnshire, was also a six-time champion at the World Highland Games.
His victories in the prestigiuos World Strongest Man event came in 1983 at Christchurch, New Zealand and 1985 at Cascais, Portugal.

Geoff was a “Gentle Giant” with immense grit and determination, who paved the way for so many athletes to believe they too could conquer the world. He would always support the Club and was a true inspiration … he made time for everyone.
One of Geoff’s greatest loves was breeding budgerigars.

He is a massive loss to the World of Athletics … Geoff’s legacy will continue to inspire.
