It is with deep sadness to report that Peter Matthews, a former President of our club for over 25 years, has passed away.
Peter was a highly respected Track & Field statistician and one of the Sport’s leading writers. He worked for many years commentating for both Radio and Television and with his clear and commanding voice, together with his encyclopaedic knowledge of Athletics, he made a huge impact in the sport.
Peter was always a strong advocate for grassroots athletics and made no apology for making his strong views known.
Peter was known Worldwide as a book editor. He was a long time editor of the International Athletics Annual and Chairman of the National Union of Track Statisticians. He was also the editor of the Guinness Book of Records from 1991 to 1995.
Stadium announcing became a big part of Peter’s life and he worked on many International as well as domestic events. He will be sadly missed.
